The Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre is excited to announce the launch of our Older Women’s Peer Support Circle.
This group will provide a safe, welcoming space for women over 50, who have experienced or are experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence.
We are honoured to have experienced social worker, Melissa Brown, facilitating the Circle.
Melissa has spent many years walking alongside women impacted by interpersonal violence. She brings deep expertise in counselling, group facilitation, and restorative justice processes.
Melissa said the circle will be an opportunity for women to connect, reflect, and heal alongside peers who understand the journey of recovery.
“The Older Women’s Support Circle is a safe and supportive place to share experiences and wisdom with others. The group will explore themes related to wellbeing and healing, with space for both conversation and creative expression.”
The Centre’s Executive Director, Sally Stevenson said being in a group with women of a similar age allows for shared understanding.
“Older women can connect through shared experiences, values, and social expectations. This peer connection reduces isolation and validates their lived wisdom. Building safe spaces means ensuring older women are heard, respected, and supported to heal in connection with others.”
Older Women’s Peer Support Circle is designed especially for women over 50 who are seeking:
- A safe and understanding environment
- The chance to connect with peers on a similar healing journey
- A space to share wisdom, stories, and support
- Opportunities for both structured reflection and informal conversation
Our first Older Women’s Peer Support Circle will be on Thursday, 23 October 2025 from 12pm to 2pm.
It will continue monthly on Thursdays.
