Feeling anxious or overwhelmed? Jean Alvisse, movement and mobility coach at the Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre, has a quick and calming technique you can use anywhere.
It’s as simple as nasal breathing.
In a short video for the Centre, Jean explains that gently breathing in and out through the nose can be a powerful way to ground yourself when you’re feeling heightened or disconnected.
She encourages people to bring awareness to their breath – feeling the air move in through the nostrils and out again.
She encourages people to breathe in through the nose for seconds, hold their breath for seven seconds, and breathe out for eight seconds.
It’s a gentle practice that helps you return to the present moment, reconnect with your body, and give your nervous system a sense of safety.
“You can do it standing, sitting, or lying down,” Jean says. “You don’t have to do anything big – just notice your breath moving through your nose.”
You can watch Jean demonstrate the technique in our video below or find out more about one of her classes by checking out our services.
