How to show self-compassion during times of shared grief

At the Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre, we hold space for the emotional, physical and spiritual impacts of living in a world during times of global conflict.

War and violence touch women’s lives in ways that echo through our bodies, families and communities.

Even when we are far from the conflict, we may feel the heaviness of global suffering, old memories resurfacing, or deep grief that seems without a name.

You are not alone.

We may be feeling…

  • Heavy-hearted or emotionally overwhelmed
  • Numb, disconnected, or “shut down”
  • Fearful for loved ones, or fearful without a clear reason
  • Desperate for moments of quiet, grounding, or meaning

All these responses are normal. They are human.

Caring for yourself in times of global grief

We deserve gentleness and self-compassion. Here are some ways to care for yourself.

  • Limit news and images to what feels sustainable
  • Spend time at the Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre groups or counselling
  • Ground in your body: Place your hand on your heart, and practice slow breathing in and out
  • Hydrate and eat regularly
  • Spend time in nature, looking at the sky, the trees, and listening to bird song – even for a minute
  • Reach out to someone who feels safe
  • Rest without guilt – your nervous system is working hard
