A new nature-based healing program launching this April will offer women who have experienced domestic, family and sexual violence a chance to slow down, reconnect, and support their recovery in a calm outdoor setting.
The Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre is launching its Healing in Nature program.
Led by psychologist Dr Rachel Yerbury, the program focuses on the therapeutic benefits of spending time in nature.
It’s based on eco-psychology principles, bringing psychology and nature together. It’s looking at the whole person and looking at how we function within our environment.”
The course will combine guided outdoor experiences with reflective practices to help participants build a deeper awareness of how nature can support recovery.
Activities may include mindful walking, grounding exercises, and sensory engagement with the environment.
“It is offering women the chance to have a safe, inclusive space where we can explore together our connection with nature, and we can find some tools and strategies we can use on the healing journey,” Ms Yerbury said.
Participants will have the opportunity to share experiences in a supportive group setting, reducing feelings of isolation and building a sense of community.
A taster session will be held on Wednesday, April 1, offering a preview of what participants can expect from the full program.
This introductory session will provide an opportunity to meet Dr Yerbury, learn more about ecotherapy, and experience some of the practices firsthand.
